How I Got My First Wedding Booking

It all began with a simple Facebook ad. Two months earlier, I had posted about offering TFP (Time for Print) couple photoshoots, hoping to build my portfolio. Then, out of the blue, I received a message. It was from a bride-to-be who had stumbled upon my ad and wanted to know if I could photograph her wedding in Karlsruhe.

My initial reaction was NO! Weddings are monumental events—what if I missed an important moment? But then, she told me she understood I had never done this before and that her expectations were low. That gave me some confidence to say yes.

Even though it was my first wedding, I treated it like the opportunity of a lifetime. I knew I had to capture every important detail and create a memorable couple photoshoot before the ceremony.

The Big Day: Facing the Nerves

The wedding day came quickly. My friend from the Netherlands, who was visiting me, joined me as my second shooter. He wasn’t a professional, but his enthusiasm and willingness to help made a huge difference.

We arrived at the venue in Karlsruhe an hour and a half before the ceremony. The couple wanted a pre-wedding shoot, and that’s where my first wave of nerves hit. As they asked where we should start, I drew a complete blank. All I could see was the building where the ceremony was to take place. Thankfully, the couple suggested a nearby church with a charming garden.

As soon as we reached the garden, my nerves began to settle. The surroundings were beautiful, and I got into the flow. My friend also captured some amazing shots from unique angles, adding an extra dimension to the session. Together, we created magic in those first moments.

Inside the Ceremony: The Real Test

When it was time for the ceremony at the Standesamt, a new challenge arose. Only a limited number of people were allowed inside, so my friend had to stay outside. I was on my own.

I reminded myself to focus on the essentials: the bride and groom’s first look, the exchange of rings, the emotional hugs and kisses. My camera became an extension of my eyes, capturing every key moment.

One of the most satisfying feelings as a photographer is that gut instinct when you know you’ve nailed the shot. Even during the ceremony, I could already picture how the final edits would look.

The Final Moments: Group Photos and My First Payment

After the ceremony, I organised group photos with the guests. This part felt lighter and more fun, as everyone was happy and relaxed. Once the shoot was complete, I received my first payment as a wedding photographer. It was a modest amount, but for me, it wasn’t about the money—it was the beginning of something new and exciting.

That day marked a turning point in my journey as a photographer. It taught me to embrace challenges, lean on the support of friends, and trust my instincts.
